When you talk into a mobile your voice is detected and the sound converted into radio waves (radiofrequency energy).
The radio waves travel through the air until they reach a receiver in a base station.
The base station then sends the call through the telephone network to the person you are calling.
The person you are calling then talks back, the message travels through the telephone network until it reaches a base station close to your phone.
The radio waves are then sent out by the base station which are detected by a receiver in your phone where the signals are transferred back into voice or data.
